چکیده

We present the results of a λ20 cm VLA observation of the compact Galactic center radio source Sgr A. The scatter-broadened image is elongated in the East-West direction, with an axial ratio of 0.6±0.05 and a position angle of 87±3. A similar shape and orientation has been found previously at shorter wavelengths using VLBI and VLBA. Both the major and minor axes follow the λ law appropriate for scattering by turbulence in the intervening medium. Assuming that the anisotropy is caused by a magnetic field permeating the scattering medium, we argue that the scattering occurs within extended HII regions lying in the central 100 pc of the Galaxy. The magnetic field in this region must be poloidal, organized and is estimated to have a strength of at least 30 to 100 μGauss. Finding Radio Pulsars in and beyond the Galactic Center

Radio-wave scattering is enhanced dramatically for galactic center sources in a region with radius∼> 15 arc min. Using scattering from Sgr A∗ and other sources, we show that pulse broadening for pulsars in the Galactic center is at least 6.3 ν−4 seconds (ν = radio frequency in GHz) and is most likely 50–200 times larger because the relevant scattering screen appears to be within the Galactic ce...

The Angular Broadening of the Galactic Center Pulsar SGR J1745-29: A New Constraint on the Scattering Medium

The pulsed radio emission from the Galactic Center (GC) magnetar SGR J1745-29 probes the turbulent, magnetized plasma of the GC hyperstrong scattering screen through both angular and temporal broadening. We present the first measurements of the angular size of SGR J1745-29, obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array and the phased Very Large Array at 8.7 and 15.4 GHz. The source sizes are consi...

Ja n 20 04 X - ray Scattering Halos from the Galactic Center : Implications for Diffuse Emission Around Sgr A ∗

We consider the absorption and scattering of X-rays observed from the Galac-tic center. One objective is to characterize the intrinsic X-ray emission from the central black hole, Sgr A * , in its quiescent and flaring states — crucial for our understanding of the accretion physics of supermassive black holes. We correct the fluxes observed by the Chandra and XMM telescopes for absorption and sc...

The Galactic Center stellar cluster : The central arcsecond ∗

With 10 years of high-resolution imaging data now available on the stellar cluster in the Galactic Center, we analyze the dynamics of the stars at projected distances ≤ 1.2 ′′ from the central black hole candidate Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). We find evidence for radial anisotropy of the cluster of stars surrounding Sgr A*. We confirm/find accelerated motion for 6 stars, with 4 stars having passed ...

Trigonometric Parallax of Sgr B 2

We have measured the positions of H2O masers in Sgr B2, a massive star forming region in the Galactic center, relative to an extragalactic radio source with the Very Long Baseline Array. The positions measured at 12 epochs over a time span of one year yield the trigonometric parallax of Sgr B2 and hence a distance to the Galactic center, R0, of R0 = 7.9 +0.8 −0.7 kpc. The proper motion of Sgr B...
